Lucy
-
Taught in NZ for over four years from March 2005 - August 2009
-
Lived overseas for two years - travelled and did relief teaching
-
Is applying for teaching jobs now
-
Practicing certificate expired 12/12/2010.
Now she is back in NZ Lucy wants to start applying for teaching positions, however, her practising certificate has just expired. Lucy was aware she needed a police certificate from the UK, so she applied for it before she left.
She hasn't received the police certificate yet but she sent her TC3 application to the Teachers Council to get the process underway. Lucy needed to have her application endorsed by the Principal of Meadowlea High School. Before she went overseas Lucy taught at Meadowlea for 2 ½ years from February 2007 - August 2009. The Principal at Meadowlea had the records of Lucy's appraisals and professional development on file and could remember Lucy well.
At Meadowlea, Lucy was appraised using the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions rather than the Registered Teacher Criteria. The criteria are now the standards for the teaching profession and for the school's performance management system.
The information on the Teachers Council website includes a series of matrices which map the Registered Teacher Criteria and the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions. This assisted the Principal as he considered Lucy's appraisal material. From the evidence at the school, the Principal, as professional leader, could attest that Lucy met the requirements to maintain full registration and he could therefore endorse Lucy's TC3 application form.
Rawiri
- Taught in Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres for over two years from May 2008 - August 2010
- Currently employed as a Youth Worker
- Practising certificate expires 05/05/2011.
Rawiri has worked as a Youth Worker since August 2010. Before that he taught at ECE centres. His practising certificate is due to expire in May and Rawiri would like to renew it so he can have the option of relief teaching.
As Rawiri was at Brighton Street ECE centre for five months and at Rhodes Street Kindergarten for more than two years before that, he has more than the required teaching service he needs to maintain his full registration.
Because Brighton Street ECE centre was where he was most recently employed in a teaching position, Rawiri phoned the Manager of the centre to check that she was prepared to endorse his application. The Manager had just started in the position during Rawiri's final few weeks at the centre. She said she needed to check the appraisal documents on file and speak with other senior staff before considering the endorsement. The Manager considered the positive appraisal material on file and discussed Rawiri's performance with the senior staff who had taught with him. With this evidence the Manager was assured that Rawiri met all of the Registered Teacher Criteria and so provided the endorsement for his application.
Alice
- Taught at Grey's Intermediate School from 2005 - 2008
- Volunteered in the New Entrant class at her son's Primary School for 2009 year
- Has been relieving for the last six months
- Practising certificate expires 06/06/2011.
Alice has been doing regular relief teaching for the last six months and her practising certificate is due to expire in June. She heard she can get her application in to the Teachers Council up to six months before it expires, so is getting ready to submit it now. She is not sure who should endorse her application so she phones the Council for advice.
Alice is advised that she needs to go back to Grey's Intermediate School for the Principal to endorse her application on the basis of the appraisal material on file. Alice knows there is a different Principal at Grey's Intermediate than when she was there in 2008 and she has not met him.
She phones the Principal of Grey's Intermediate and he is able to find only the appraisal done with Alice in 2008. Alice has kept her appraisals from 2005, 2006 and 2007, along with evidence of professional development she has completed over the last three years. She makes a time to meet with the Principal and she brings along her appraisal material and professional development evidence.
Since their conversation, the Principal has also spoken with the teacher who was Alice's supervising teacher during her provisional registration Induction and Mentoring programme. The Principal is happy to endorse Alice's application to maintain her full registration and practising certificate based on the evidence Alice has provided. He looked at the fact that Alice was recommended for full registration while teaching at Grey's Intermediate following her successful two-year Induction and Mentoring programme.
