Status of Teachers and Teaching

A joint research project was undertaken between 2003 - 2006 by the New Zealand Teachers Council and the Ministry of Education inquiring into the status of teachers in New Zealand and implications for recruitment, retention and professionalisation of teachers. Research was commissioned to provide an evidence base for development of policy and benchmarks for on-going monitoring. Three research reports were completed, of which the second and third are formally published. The first scoping report is available on request to the Ministry of Education or the Teachers Council.

The three reports are:

1. Cameron, M. (2003). Identifying Teacher Status, Its Impact and Recent Teacher Status Initiatives. Working paper prepared for the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Teachers Council.

2. Kane, R., & Mallon, M. (2005). Perceptions of Teachers and Teaching. Final Report. Wellington: Ministry of Education, New Zealand Teachers Council.

3. Hall, D., & Langton B. (2006). Perceptions of the Status of Teachers. A Market Research Study. Final Report. Wellington: Ministry of Education, New Zealand Teachers Council.
