Provisionally Registered Teachers
Welcome to the teaching profession in Aotearoa New Zealand. As a Provisionally Registered Teacher (PRT) you may be a newly qualified teacher, or you may have some experience as a teacher but you are yet to gain full registration in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Induction and Mentoring programmes for Provisonally Registered Teachers
As a new PRT in New Zealand you can expect to receive an induction and mentoring programme over at least two years that enables you to gain full registration. During your induction programme, you will receive ongoing support from a fully registered teacher who can provide you with expertise and guidance to assist you with meeting the criteria for full registration.
The New Zealand Teachers Council's vision is that high quality induction programmes will be provided for all PRTs employed in a teaching position to enable them to achieve full registration as a teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Getting Started
To begin your induction programme, you need to be employed in a teaching position that meets the requirements set by the Teachers Council. You need to:
- be employed in a teaching position of 0.5 Full Time Teacher Equivalent (this normally equates to 12.5 hours per week)
- teach in minimum blocks of 10 weeks
- be employed within the general education system or a setting approved by the Teachers Council for gaining full registration
- hold provisional registration and a current practising certificate
It is also a good idea to:
- Familiarise yourself with the components of a good induction programme by reading information about induction and mentoring programmes in this section of the website and referring to the Guidelines for Induction and Mentoring and Mentor Teachers.
- Read about your entitlements as a provisionally registered teacher.
- Contact the Teachers Council for advice if you can't find the answers to your questions on the website.
