New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)

When an applicant for registration as a teacher in New Zealand has overseas qualifications, they are required to have these qualifications assessed by NZQA to determine their comparability to a New Zealand teaching qualification and for authentication of the transcript and academic record.  The New Zealand Teachers Council uses the International Qualifications Assessment report when considering whether an applicant meets the registration standard 'satisfactorily trained to teach'.  A copy must be provided to the Teachers Council. Information about the process of applying for an international qualifications assessment can be found on the NZQA website.

NZQA are unable to assess the study of employment based pathways to teaching that do not lead to an academic award of sufficient credits from an accredited institution.

If your qualifications have been previously assessed by the Department of Education or the Ministry of Education in New Zealand, this assessment may be provided in place of the NZQA assessment.

Applicants who do not receive comparability with New Zealand qualifications for teaching in the early childhood / primary / or secondary sector by NZQA may wish to be considered for registration under the discretionary pathway of Track 2.
