Māori Medium Research Projects
Whakamanahia Te Reo Māori
The New Zealand Teachers Council has embarked on a research project to investigate issues in the initial teacher education (ITE) programmes that prepare teachers for Māori medium settings in schools and early childhood education. This project originated from the Council's Māori Medium Advisory Group and aims to enhance Māori language proficiency levels of these graduates. The first report, a description of current programmes and issues, was released in December 2008.
This research report by Haemata Ltd involved an environmental scan of Māori medium ITE programmes. The report was launched by the Council with a hui of ITE educators and others with an interest in quality provision of ITE programmes for kaiako in Māori medium settings. Key findings of the research highlight a range of practices and issues around establishing and developing te reo proficiency while preparing students for teaching in Māori medium settings.
