Signposts for the Profession Conference

World Teachers' Day 31 October 2008

This conference celebrated International World Teachers' Day in Aotearoa New Zealand by examining ways in which we describe the knowledge, skills and attributes of effective teachers and how we conceive what is a teaching role.

The keynote speaker was Dr Graeme Aitken, Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland.  Dr Aitken's address explored links between concepts of teaching, as outlined in the NZ Curriculum and Te Whāriki, and the Council's draft Registered Teacher Criteria. A copy of Dr. Atiken's powerpoint presentation can be obtained here: The Wisdom of Teaching: Signposts for the Profession <536KB PowerPoint> a condensed html summary can be viewed here

Following the keynote address there were opportunities to workshop and explore the draft Registered Teacher Criteria in more detail and to discuss issues around teacher registration policy and ways forward for the profession. The Council thanks delegates for their attendance and contributions to the discussion. The profession will be kept informed of ongoing developments and consultation.
