Signposts for the Profession Conference

World Teachers' Day 31 October 2008

This conference celebrates International World Teachers' Day in Aotearoa New Zealand by examining ways in which we describe the knowledge, skills and attributes of effective teachers and how we conceive what is a teaching role.

The keynote speaker will be Dr Graeme Aitken, acting Dean of the University of Auckland Faculty of Education.  Dr Aitken's address will explore links between concepts of teaching, as outlined in the NZ Curriculum and Te Whāriki, and the Council's draft Registered Teacher Criteria.

Following the keynote address there will be opportunities to workshop and explore the draft Registered Teacher Criteria in more detail as well as discuss issues around teacher registration policy and ways forward for the profession.

Registration

Invitations to the conference have been widely disseminated so spaces will fill up quickly. Please ensure an early response to avoid disappointment.

Venue

The conference will take place at the Holiday Inn in central Wellington. A map of the location can be found by clicking the thumbnail picture. Map of Wellington

Parking

There are a range of parking options in Wellington. They vary in terms of rate and accessibility, from well organised parking buildings to on street metered parking. On the whole, buildings work out to be cheaper than meters for long term parking and most have an all-day parking rate. To qualify for the all-day rate drivers must be parked before 9:30am in most buildings. In streets just outside the CBD the Wellington city council operates an all day parking coupon system which works out to be relatively inexpensive.
